Samsung teased the existence of a higher-end Galaxy Z Fold Ultra

Summary

  • Samsung has teased the existence of a next-generation Galaxy Z Fold handset that inherits the company’s Ultra branding.
  • It’s unclear whether this device will serve as a direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, or if it’ll be offered as a more premium hardware tier.
  • Rumors indicate a July launch window for Samsung’s next-generation of foldable devices.

In a new blog post titled “Meet the Next Chapter of Ultra,” Samsung Newsroom US is teasing the company’s next-generation book-style foldable smartphone. Presumably the successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 6, the short post signals the South Korean phone maker’s intent to merge together its high-end Ultra branding with its existing pedigree of flagship folding phone models.

“With industry-leading hardware, cutting-edge performance and seamless AI integration optimized for the foldable format, it’s what users have come to expect from Galaxy Ultra. And when it unfolds, it transforms– into a more immersive entertainment hub, a spacious workspace, or a multitasking powerhouse, now enhanced by powerful Galaxy AI features designed specifically for the foldable form,” says Samsung.

New Galaxy Z Fold 7 leaks indicates Samsung’s foldable could get much thinner

Recent leaks indicate that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 could present strong competition to the Oppo Find N5.

Embedded within the blog post is a brief video, which depicts the unfolding silhouette of a Galaxy Z Fold-style handset against a lightly illuminated backdrop. Ending with “the Ultra experience is ready to unfold,” it can be deduced that Samsung wants to release an Ultra-tier book-style smartphone later this year.

There aren’t many other official details to go off of at this time, aside from the mention of custom-designed Galaxy AI features intended for the foldable form factor. What these AI additions might look like, and how useful they might ultimately prove to be, is entirely up in the air.

Pocket-lint

For as well-refined as recent-generation Galaxy Z Fold smartphones have become, I can’t help but feel like Samsung has been stagnating on the hardware front. After testing out both the Honor Magic V3 and the Oppo Find N5 book-style foldables in recent months, Samsung’s latest folding flagship feels thicker, heavier, and duller by comparison.

A long-standing criticism of the Z Fold line is that, despite its near $2,000 price tag, it fails to deliver all the cutting-edge specifications found in Samsung’s slab-style Galaxy S Ultra series. Notably, recent Z Fold devices have featured camera arrays that are a step down from their Ultra-branded contemporaries.

…foldables have been around in a mainstream capacity for half a decade, and we’ve yet to see MSRPs hit a more appealing price point.

True feature and specification parity across both of Samsung’s high-end phone lines would be ideal, especially in an increasingly competitive market filled with excellent Android foldables. That being said, I worry about price creep — foldables have been around in a mainstream capacity for half a decade, and we’ve yet to see MSRPs hit a more appealing price point.

Previous rumors have suggested a July launch window for Samsung’s next foldable devices (via Android Headlines), with leaked CAD files pointing to a slimmer-than-before 4.5mm frame thickness. Pocket-lint will keep a close eye on additional next-generation Galaxy Z Fold leaks and rumors, ahead of the device’s inevitable launch later this year.
