Oh Jeez, Rick and Morty Will Return in May

April Fools’ Day is upon us, but this is no joke: Rick and Morty season eight hits Adult Swim May 25, with a first look to prove it. The news came as part of Adult Swim’s annual April 1 celebration, and also included a 22-minute special of favorite Rick and Morty moments re-interpreted in appropriately and unexpectedly freaky ways. Adult Swim described it as pulling from “absurd, live-action, theater-based genres,” and frankly you just need to watch it to believe it.

First up, here’s the season eight sneak peek, which gets a typically vague description: “Rick and Morty is back for Season Eight! Life has meaning again! Anything is possible! Look out for adventures with Summer, Jerry, Beth, and the other Beth. Maybe Butter Bot will get a new task? Whatever happens, you can’t keep Rick and Morty down for long. People have tried!”

And, should you need a human-sized Pickle Rick in your life, feast your eyes on the special broadcast, now up on YouTube for all to see:

“We hope you enjoyed our theater interpretations of Rick and Morty, especially if you are well-off/impulsive and now want to back a Broadway version of the show,” Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen said in the press release. “For the rest of you, we’re glad you now know when season eight is starting so you have time to stretch and get loose because the team has yet again made a totally great season of television.”

We don’t doubt it, and now that we know May 25 is the day Rick and Morty is returning to delight fans in over 170 countries (in the U.S., you can purchase new episodes the day after they premiere on Adult Swim; the season will start streaming September 1), we can start our countdown calendar accordingly.

Rick and Morty stars Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden as the title characters, along with Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer. It’s executive produced by Dan Harmon and Scott Marder; Marder is also the showrunner.
