I found a great way to easily clean my Kindle

Summary

  • Kindles are prone to fingerprints and smudge marks, and thoroughly cleaning your Kindle is the best way to get it looking new again.
  • Cleaning the display and frame is easy with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth.
  • A compressed air can and screen cleaner can further improve your Kindle’s cleanliness, but you’ll need to be cautious.

I’ve been using my new Kindle e-reader for a couple of weeks now, and one thing I’ve noticed as a first-time Kindle user is that it’s very prone to fingerprints and smudges. If you’re like me and want to keep your Kindle looking as new as possible, then properly cleaning it is a great way to achieve that.

Even if you have an older Kindle, giving it a thorough clean is one of the best ways to revitalize it and make it look new again. Chances are, if you’re an avid reader, you’ve got a lot of fingerprints on your screen from turning hundreds of pages on your Kindle. Luckily, cleaning the display and the entire device is super easy.

How to clean your Kindle

A microfiber cloth is your best friend for this

Kindle with screen cleaning materials.

If you want to clean your Kindle, you’ll need the following household items. I found these worked perfectly to clean my Kindle 2024 model without damaging it.

  • A microfiber cloth
  • A compressed air can
  • Screen cleaner or lens cleaner

If you’re looking for a quick way to clean your screen, a slightly damp microfiber cloth will do the trick. However, if you want to take it a step further, a compressed can of air and a screen cleaner will be even more effective for cleaning your device. I personally recommend using Whoosh screen cleaner, which is an alcohol-free screen cleaner you can find on Amazon. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean your Kindle.

  1. Power off your Kindle. To do this, hold down the power button. A selection of options will appear on your Kindle’s screen. Select “Screen off.”
  2. Use the microfiber cloth to gently wipe your Kindle’s screen and frame. You’ll notice immediately that this will lift any fingerprints and smudge marks off the device. Don’t apply excessive pressure to clean the screen; you just need to gently wipe it.
  3. If you have a compressed air can, you can use it to blow dust out of your Kindle’s USB port and any lingering dust on the screen. Do this in gentle short bursts, and don’t blow it right up against the screen or USB port; that could damage the device. Give the can’s nozzle and your Kindle a bit of space, and let the air do its work. Remember always to hold the compressed air can upright.
  4. Take your microfiber cloth and spray a tiny amount of lens cleaner/screen cleaner on it. Never spray the Kindle’s display directly; this could damage it. Most lens cleaners contain isopropyl alcohol and distilled water, which helps clean screens, but you’ll only want a little bit to get the job done here. Excessive amounts of liquid on the screen could damage it. Leave a spot on the cloth dry.
  5. Next, gently wipe the screen with the dampened microfiber cloth to eliminate any remaining dust or grime. Use a dry spot on the microfiber cloth to go over the screen again to ensure it has dried.
  6. Finally, use the microfiber cloth again, just as you did on the screen, on the Kindle’s frame and backside. This will help remove any marks or grime on the Kindle’s shell.

If you follow all the steps above, your Kindle will shine again like it did when you first took it out of the box. If you want to keep your Kindle extra clean, I suggest giving it a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth a few times a week, which will help prevent the excessive buildup of fingerprints, smudge marks, and dust.
