A major payment option is disappearing from Google Wallet in just a few days

If you use an Android smartphone, there’s a strong possibility you often take advantage of Google Wallet for quick online and in-person payments. It’s undoubtedly one of the best digital wallets out there, and for many, it’s hard to live without it due to its sheer convenience.

Over the years, Google has consistently improved the app. Recently, it announced the launch of nearby notifications for loyalty cards and added support for driver’s licenses in some states, along with NFC-based car keys. You can now even store a digital version of your passport within the app.

However, Google Wallet is set to lose one significant feature this June: its support for one of the world’s largest digital payment platforms, PayPal.

According to a Google support forum post (via Android Authority), you can no longer link a PayPal account directly to the Google Wallet app in the US. And starting on June 13, 2025, any linked PayPal account to Google Wallet in the US “will be automatically deleted and no longer supported.”

June 13 is less than two weeks away, so if you have a PayPal account linked to your Google Wallet, it will soon be completely inaccessible through the app.

It’s unclear why PayPal’s integration with Google Wallet is being discontinued. No official reasoning is given on Google’s support page, and PayPal hasn’t said why either.

It’s important to note that if you have a PayPal debit card in your Google Wallet, it will continue to function normally; only the direct integration with PayPal accounts will no longer be supported starting June 13. Google recommends updating your payment method with any businesses that use your linked PayPal account through Google Wallet if you have recurring payments set up. Otherwise, after June 13, those payments will fail.

While this affects Google Wallet users who utilize their PayPal account in the US, it does not impact users in Germany. And PayPal’s recent moves in Germany may shed light on why it’s discontinuing Google Wallet support in the US soon. As noted by Android Authority, PayPal recently updated its Android and iOS apps only in Germany to support contactless payment methods.

“Consumers will be able to choose PayPal to pay safely and easily with a simple tap of their phone at any location that accepts Mastercard contactless payments,” PayPal stated in a press release.

PayPal also mentions this feature will be available on its app to German users before “anywhere else in the world,” possibly hinting at upcoming expansions, potentially in the US.

This is purely speculation and not confirmed, but given its shift to contactless payment methods within its own app, it’s possible that PayPal has removed support for Google Wallet in the US in preparation for launching its own Google Wallet alternative soon. However, this still raises the question of why PayPal account integration for Google Wallet is still supported in Germany, where this feature has already been launched.

Whatever PayPal plans for its app in the future, it’s disappointing that PayPal accounts are no longer supported by Google Wallet in the US. Having all your payment methods in one app is convenient, and with this latest change, if you’re a PayPal user who uses Google Wallet, this will no longer be the case.
